Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team could be building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously permissive, letting players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
